Introduction to the Korean language

Korean is spoken by more than 70 million people, mainly with a
regional restriction to the Korean Peninsula. The Korean script
Hangeul 한글 is characterized
by its systematics and logic and was declared a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO in 1997.

The Korean alphabet was invented by King Sejong in 1443. At that time
the Korean language lacked a uniform script and most
common people could neither read nor write. The
official script consisted of Chinese words and learning these
was reserved for the nobility alone.

King Sejong pursued the goal of giving the common people the opportunity
to express themselves in writing.

In Hangeul, the letters are combined into syllables and es is thus
possible to reproduce and represent all possible sounds.
